Hello, Nerve net!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Support Good quality. The right crop is a bit unfortunate, the image would be better with a bit more contrast and vibrance. --Basotxerri 19:35, 15 November 2018 (UTC)  Comment I can crop out the right door but the resolution has to be lowered a bit and/or the subject has to be moved left, regarding increasing the contrast, no problem to do that but this will darken the shadows in subjects face. About vibrance. Do you mean saturation? Please give your feedbak. Regards. --Nerve net 13:14, 16 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tilted and needs perspective correction. If you haven't got more image space left, you might get in trouble with the crop after fixing the perspective. --Basotxerri 19:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC) Comment IMHO no tilting needed, the land behind the castle has different heights giving that appearance. File:Ancient Greek metal toy soldiers.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Verbcatcher (talk) 18:21, 13 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am sorry that this photo has a problem, because it is a high-quality image that would be good to have on Commons. I came across it in Category:Taken with Canon TS-E 24mm F3.5L, where I was looking because I am thinking of bidding for this lens in an auction.
I think that you used the tilt function of the lens to change the plane of focus, so that all the figures are in focus. It would be good to have a photo like this to illustrate the Tilt–shift photography and Scheimpflug principle articles in English Wikipedia, and the corresponding articles in other languages. For this purpose it would be better to have a photo with a background that is more obviously out of focus. Can you create something suitable? Otherwise I may try, if I win the auction. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 00:00, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Verbcatcher, yes I used the tilt function of this lens to move he plane of focus over all figures as much as possible.
Normally I use tilt to isolate subjects/parts of the image like here: https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=443336&title=remero&cat=500
and here: https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=437221&title=pyracantha-urbana&cat=500
But also tried what you are asking for here (with less success than with the toys): https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=438387&title=cinco-ca-f1os&cat=500
Let me review my pictures in order to see if I've something that meets your request. Nerve net (talk) 08:14, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nerve net, is this sculpture permanently installed at this location or only temporarily? --Túrelio (talk) 09:00, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Temporarily until December 15th, more information at https://meninasmadridgallery.com/ Nerve net (talk) 09:12, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. You are probably aware that these sculptures are copyrighted works of art and that a temporary installation in the public is not sufficient to be covered by Spain's freedom-of-panorama exception. Is there any established agreement between the sculptors and the gallery/organisation about permission of photos of their sculptures, taken during the exhibition on the street? Of course, it would be a pain if we had to delete all these images, but we need be sure about the copyright status of each image to prevent re-users getting into legal problems. Are you aware if there has been a previous deletion-discussion about this exhibition (in earlier years)? --Túrelio (talk) 09:27, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
First: Nothing is stated in any way at the website. Nerve net (talk) 10:14, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Second: Do you have asked this question also to all contributors of the images available at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Meninas_Madrid_Gallery? Nerve net (talk) 10:16, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Third: If you plan to raise a deletetion request please do so, but please do it for all images available at the category https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Meninas_Madrid_Gallery. So all contributors can respond you. Nerve net (talk) 10:18, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To Second: I had simply assumed that you were also the photographer in the previous years. Seems that was not the case. --Túrelio (talk) 10:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead and ask them too please. Nerve net (talk) 10:30, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If read corresponding Spanish Laws:
- https://www.boe.es/buscar/doc.php?id=BOE-A-2018-5059
I'm not a lawyer but so far I could read, the current License CC BY-SA is not the right one to use as it allows the comercial ussage of the images, the comercial ussage is one of the topics that constantly appear in the reffered laws.
So I propose in a first attempt, to change the license of the images to CC BY-SA-NC: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/
In Art. 32: It seems that images can be used freely without express permission of the author for educational o scientific investigation purposes. But I need help from other to ensure to not wrongly interpret this article of the law. Is there a group or team for such issues? Nerve net (talk) 10:55, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Changing to NC would make them incompatible with Commons, i.e. resulting automatically in deletion. As the problem has been ignored (by us all) for 3 years, we don't need to hurry now. I think I will open (likely not today) a regular (slow) DR for the 3 images from 2019 (other photographer) and 2021 (you) in order to get an evaluation/interpretation of the actual FoP-related jurisdiction in Spain wrt to "permanently installed". In case the result is negative (for our images), I would propose that either you or somebody from Wikimedia-Espana talks to the organizing gallery about the problem and its solution. --Túrelio (talk) 11:06, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Nerve net (talk) 11:10, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When creating a new cat for the 2018 event (Category:Meninas Madrid Gallery 2018), I discovered that the problem is even more complex, as File:Ochenta Meninas inundarán Madrid esta primavera de la mano de Madrid Capital de Moda 01.jpg (and more images) seems to have been released by a local newspaper (from where our uploader it has taken) under a free license. But whether that license is valid in this case is also questionable, as it concerns the copyright of the artist and as FoP is clearly not applicable (indoors). --Túrelio (talk) 11:23, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but what stands FoP for? Nerve net (talk) 11:34, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Freedom of panorama. --Túrelio (talk) 11:35, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
One last thing about this temporary exposition.
These sculptures will be sold at a charity auction after the temporary exhibition. The temporary exhibition will end on December 15th. So the owner of the sculptures will change.
So far I know the sculptures of the prior exhibitions were also sold in charity auctions. Nerve net (talk) 12:15, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, though ownership is legally not relevant for copyright, which remains by the artist, if not actively transferred to the buyer. I'll try to open the DR until tomorrow. --Túrelio (talk) 17:11, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,

Warning[edit]

Hi Nerve net. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request: omitting subpage and transclusion. Here, Delete is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people. Warning: such edits are not tolerated and have led to account blocks, as "We cannot work here with people who are not willing to follow our procedures, in particular for deletion requests." You could also have used G7.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:01, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thank you Jeff.
As soon as possible I will review the links you provided regarding the topic.
I apologize for any inconvenience.
